George W. McFarlen, Jr.

We are sad to announce the passing of George Washington McFarlen, Jr., 66 years of age, of Del Rio, Texas, who passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. George was born on June 2, 1956, in Del Rio, Texas and often talked about his childhood working in the hay fields and playing football. He attended Del Rio High School and graduated in 1974. He went on to attend South West Texas State University in San Marcos, where he continued to play football and began his law enforcement career. He served in law enforcement for many years and was highly respected by the citizens he served and his fellow law enforcement officers. He had many accomplishments throughout his career and was often described as someone you always wanted on your side. He left law enforcement after the birth of his two daughters, April and Victoria, and went to work in the oil fields. After a job-related injury in 2001, he continued to show his courage and strength as he battled with serious medical issues for many years. Despite his many challenges, he continued to live his life to the fullest and was an inspiration to all that knew him. George was considered as a master outdoorsman and was revered by many for his knowledge of hunting and fishing. He was a devoted father and will be remembered for all the ways he shaped our lives with his wisdom and many stories. George is survived by his daughters, April McFarlen and Victoria Barrera (husband Ramero Barrera); his 3 grandchildren, Nyleah Martinez, Tristen Vaughan, and Hailey Vaughan. George is also survived by his sisters, Linda Sotelo (husband Cesar Sotelo), Nancy Vignali (husband Carl Vignali), and Patricia Moody (husband Kenneth Moody); his nieces and nephew, Lisa Cardinale, Cesar Sotelo, and Meredith Blake Garvelli; his great nieces and nephews, Juliette Cardinale, Elena Cardinale, Olivia Sotelo, and Cesar Sotelo, Tony Garvelli, Allie Garvelli, and Garrett Garvelli. George is proceeded in death by his parents, George and Helon McFarlen and his niece, Rebecca Vignali. Visitation is scheduled Sunday, May 14, 2023 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Amistad Funeral Home, 114 Fletcher Dr., Del Rio, Texas. Funeral service will be held Monday, May 15, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Central Church of Christ, 402 W. Cantu Rd. Del Rio, Texas with pastor Mike Copeland, Officiating. Interment to follow at Westlawn Cemetery.
