Dennis Slubar, Sr.

Dennis Joe Slubar Sr., 88, went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2025. He was greeted in heaven by both his parents Emil and Hattie Slubar, his wife Rose Mary Slubar, his brother Leroy Slubar, his son Dennis "Dusty" Slubar Jr., and his grandson Bryan Slubar. Dennis is survived by his children Dawn Shewbart, Richard Slubar, Dustin Slubar and wife Emily Slubar, and Rose Garza and husband Mario Garza, his grandchildren Joseph, Matthew, Brittany, Austin, Bryce, and Tanner, and his 8 great-grandchildren. Dennis was born in Weimar, Texas on August 26, 1936. He graduated from Weimer High School in 1955 and immediately followed in his older brother Leroy's footsteps, signing on to work for Southern Pacific Railroad as a Telegrapher. Later he transitioned to Law Enforcement and his career included service as a peace officer for Colorado County, Kinney County, Universal City, and Del Rio. An amazing and award-winning marksman in the 1960s, Dennis and his brother Leroy were members of the Maverick Gun Club. Dennis was also an avid outdoorsman and his excellent marksmanship surely came in handy whether he was deer hunting or qualifying with his service weapon. Dennis' other hobbies included racing horses for a time in the 1980's with his horse "Wet Thunder" winning numerous races at Navarro Downs in Nuevo Laredo. Always a sports fan, with football and baseball at the top of his list, Dennis passed just hours before the 59th Super Bowl and quite possibly put in a good word for the Eagles, whom Dennis was rooting for (sorry Chiefs fans)! After falling in love and marrying a life-long resident of Kinney County, Dennis and his wife Rose Mary had three children and eventually made their way to Brackettville, settling down in Rose Mary's hometown, where they would later adopt two more children. It is there they would continue to raise their children and love on their grandchildren and great grandchildren until their passing. While in Brackettville, Dennis became employed as a Ranch Foreman and served the same ranch for over 40 years. Always one to keep busy, he also spent time being of service to Kinney County as a Deputy Sheriff, selling insurance, and for a time, Dennis and Rose Mary owned and operated the Kinney Calvaryman Newspaper. Dennis and Rose Mary are both dearly missed. A viewing for Dennis Joe Slubar, Sr. will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 10 AM to 11 AM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 301 S. Ann St. in Brackettville, Texas, 78832. A funeral service will immediately follow on the same day at 11 AM at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 301 S. Ann St., Brackettville, Texas, 78832. Interment to follow at St. Mary Magdalene's Catholic Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas, 78832. After the Graveside Service, the family will host a reception at the St. Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church Auxiliary Building inviting friends and family of Dennis Slubar Sr. to join for a light lunch, refreshments, and Dennis' favorite pastries and cookies from Haby's Bakery.
